'Feels like home'. That is how our students describe their feelings on staying at UniKL RCMP

#MalaysiaMembaca campaign was initiated and inspired by the Minister of Education, Dr Maszlee Malek on 6th August 2018. The Ministry of Education launched the Read@UNI with the slogan “With Knowledge We Lead”, in every public and private university in conjunction with this Reading Campaign. The Read@UNI was officiated by the minister himself on 29th November 2018 at Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor UiTM Shah Alam. UniKL libraries have been instructed to organize programs that support this campaign both at the Chancellery level as well as at the campus level.

Zamani Learning Hub came up with the idea of having a discussion program on reading. This idea was supported by the Head of Campus, Tn Hj. Hisshamuddin Omar who urged the library to organize such programs regularly.

En. Muhammad Nizam Abdullah is a young entrepreneur who was involved in selling books. He then came up with the idea of becoming an independent publisher while he was continuing his studies in Computer Science at UNITEN. He set up a company called TebuOne Press, that now publishes novels by young Malaysian writers. One such writer is Kartini Arifin or better known as Tini 3R (once a popular teenage bulletin program on TV3) who published her own book titled “Mama O Travel” a travelogue with TebuOne Press.

The program “A Discussion with En. Muhammad Nizam b. Abdullah”, was held on 28th November, at 3.30 pm at the Library. Thirty students of Foundation in Medical Sciences took part in this session. The program started with the opening remarks by the Head of Library, Puan Suhaila Ishak, followed by a poetry recital by the HusBand (RCMP band). The moderator of the program was Cik Nor Azrin Abdul Samad from the QA Department of the Faculty of Medicine.

Cik Nor Azrin handled the discussion very professionally as the moderator of the program. En Muhammad Nizam urged students to read books of any genre and inculcate the habit of reading. He shared his experience as an independent publisher and encouraged youngsters to start writing if they aspire to become writers. His company welcomed anyone who would like to publish their work under TebuOne Press. The program was aired live on “Zamani Learning Hub FB live session” and can still be viewed. The program proceeded with a Q & A session with the publisher.

Before the program ended, we had a simple ceremony to present the “Top Borrowers Award” that went to two Year Two MBBS students. Tokens of appreciation were given to En. Muhammad Nizam, Cik Azrin and all the members of HusBand. The HusBand then belted out another Malay poem and ended the program.

It was a very useful and entertaining program and the students enjoyed the talk show. The Library plans to do more of such programs in the future in support of #MalaysiaMembaca and Read@UNI for 2019.
